THE GAME GUIDE

Chess

Put the opponent’s king in checkmate.

01 · THE ESSENTIALS

The rules to get started

The proposed variant

Castling, promotion, en passant, and repetitions.

THE ESSENTIALS

How to Play

  1. White starts. Each piece family has its own move.
  2. A move may not leave your own king in check. Checkmate ends the game; stalemate is a draw.
  3. Castling requires, among other things, a king and rook that have not moved and a king's path free from check.
  4. En passant capture is played immediately after the opponent's pawn advances two squares.
  5. On the last rank, choose queen, rook, bishop, or knight. The engine also handles repetition and draw rules.
